How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Like any city gal, I wanted to feel polished yet comfortable while out and about—whether on my commute or on my way to dinner. However, I dreaded carrying my heavy tote and clunky laptop bag. The weight on one shoulder led to regrettable injuries, and my doctor told me I should switch to a backpack. I knew a backpack would be a smarter option, but grew frustrated when I couldn’t find one that truly combined form and function. I decided quit my career in management consulting and launch my own brand with a simple philosophy: combine luxury and utility into products that inspire women to look and feel their best. I wanted to reinvent backpacks that were tailored for women. Our products are beautifully classic, with feminine details and an elusive quality to help you live up to your full potential. Here are our burning reasons for starting this company: 1) Handbags are a pain—literally. Many women carry an excessive load, unknowing of the health risks. We believe two straps are better than one. 2) We hated the backpack options out there. Too masculine. Too sporty. Too casual. Or not functional enough! We decided to make something better, more tailored for women. 3) We’re design-drive and believe products should be simple, beautiful, and useful. We won’t settle for anything less. 4) We celebrate women’s empowerment by sharing the stories of strong women we admire. We never use fashion models, but rather role models in all of our campaigns.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

Without a doubt, the best experience has been delighting customers, who’ve been searching for a solution to the exact same problem we faced. From a space toxicologist (think NASA) and Amazing Race winner, to a corporate lawyer and world travel writer—our customers have come from such rich and diverse backgrounds. And yet we are all united by our desire to be look smart and feel great.
